What is ADHD?
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder which expresses itself in childhood and can transition into adulthood and is now considered a lifelong condition.
The core symptoms are hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention.
Types of ADHD are combined type, inattentive type and hyperactive/impulsive type.
Why do children get ADHD?
ADHD in children is believed to be caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, and developmental factors.
It can be hereditary, with genes playing a significant role.
Certain environmental factors, such as exposure to lead, and problems with the central nervous system during development may also contribute.
Why do adults get ADHD?
ADHD must express itself in childhood to fulfil the criteria for diagnosis in adulthood.
Depending on the severity of ADHD in childhood these symptoms transition into adulthood.
Equally, some children can grow “out of symptoms” and no longer have symptoms in adulthood or symptoms are less troublesome.
How is ADHD in adults and children characterised?
ADHD is characterised by symptoms of hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention.
Symptoms, noticeable as early as 3 years of age, include difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, restlessness, acting on impulse, and problems with danger awareness.
These symptoms can vary in severity and may continue into adulthood.
In adulthood these symptoms may express themselves differently, more prominent or less severe and can have a negative impact on your functioning and daily life resulting in low confidence and self-esteem.
How can it be treated?
Before treatment, an assessment will need to take place by an ADHD Specialist to determine if you have ADHD or not.
If you do, then the first line treatment is medication, followed by talking therapies i.e. CBT and/or life coaching.
Shared care for ADHD medication
f you are considering or currently undergoing treatment for ADHD, it’s important to understand how shared care works.
Shared care is a formal arrangement where your specialist (such as our team) works together with your GP to manage your ongoing ADHD medication. Not all GP surgeries accept shared care agreements, so we strongly recommend that you speak with your GP practice directly to confirm whether they are willing to enter into a shared care agreement for ADHD treatment.
Having this conversation early can help ensure continuity of care and avoid delays in your treatment plan.
Is it lifelong, or can you overcome it?
ADHD can be a lifelong condition, and for many children it does continue as they transition into an adult, but it just presents itself in different ways.
However, it can be successfully treated, allowing your child or yourself to live a meaningful life with your family and loved ones.
If you are interested to know if you or your child would benefit an ADHD assessment, take our self-screening quiz.
Is there any difference between an NHS diagnosis or privately?
There would be no difference between the validity of a privately funded versus an NHS assessment. It is similar to if you were seeking an assessment for something like back pain privately. Most professionals that provide private assessments also work within the NHS. As long as the professional is appropriately qualified, registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and adheres to the NICE guidelines regarding assessment then it will be equally as valid
