is one of the most common psychiatric conditions in the UK. Depression is characterised by persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness and worthlessness, and a lack of interest and enthusiasm in activities that would have previously been considered enjoyable.
Common Symptoms Include:
- Continuous low mood
- Having low self-esteem
- Having thoughts of a suicidal nature, or thoughts about harming yourself
- Feeling anxious or angry
- Lack of energy
- Changes in appetite and weight (usually decreased)
- Low sex drive (low libido)

is a sleep disorder and can be characterised by difficulties either falling or staying asleep, which often ends up resulting in distress and difficulties with carrying out daily activities. Insomnia can cause or be exacerbated by other conditions such as depression and anxiety.
Insomnia that lasts 3 months or longer is classed as chronic insomnia and is usually caused as a result of other conditions and pain, whereas acute (short-term) insomnia is usually caused by new environments, work stress and excessive noise, alcohol or recreational drugs etc. and lasts less than 3 months.
Common Symptoms Include:
- Difficulty getting to sleep
- Waking up in constantly during the night
- Laying awake at night
- Finding it hard to nap when tired
- Feel tired during the day
- Finding it difficult to concentrate during the day because you’re tired
- Steel feeling tired after waking up
- Feeling anxious
(Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) is a mental health disorder resulting from the experiencing or witnessing an emotionally traumatic event.
Common Symptoms Include:
- Re-experiencing the traumatic/emotional memory, through flashbacks and nightmares
- Recurring distressing thoughts
- Hyperarousal – difficulty sleeping, concentrating, easily startled
- Feeling detached from relationships (can be from intentionally avoiding people and places that remind you trauma).

(Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder) is a chronic condition that affects learning and development in children.
ADHD is most commonly diagnosed at a younger age (usually under 12) but can also be recognised later in adulthood.
Symptoms of ADHD can be categorised into two types which are, inattentiveness and hyperactivity and impulsiveness.
Common Symptoms of inattentiveness type Include:
- Having a short attention span
- Difficulty concentrating and focusing
- Getting distracted easily and making careless mistakes
- Inability to stick to time consuming, menial tasks and constantly changing tasks
Common Symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsiveness type Include:
- Being unable to sit still and constantly fidgeting
- Unable to concentrate on tasks
- Excessive talking and movement
- Unable to wait their turn
- Interrupting conversations
- Little or no sense of danger
Symptoms of ADHD are different in adults compared to in children, such as hyperactivity decreasing. Some common symptoms of ADHD in adulthood include – poor organisational skills, forgetfulness, irritability and short temper, interrupting others, constantly starting new tasks and impatience.
